Many people have disabilities. Most of them are still perfectly capable of working at a high level as long as they find a job that fits their abilities. Fixing the education systems as well as having more choice of occupation through an employment agency could help disabled people live to their full potential. People who have intellectual and mental disabilities can be fairly capable of getting around on their own, and can live independently as long as they find a job that fits their abilities. Some people who have intellectual disabilities and people who have physical disabilities often do have difficulty getting around on their own and living independently. Assisted living centers could be built that are designed specifically for the physically handicapped, ideally locations that give them access to public transportation and shopping with ease. Ideally disabled people can work from their room on a computer, but possibly the centers could have work opportunities available on site as well. Surveys could possibly be done to see what types of occupations intellectually disabled and physically disabled people are currently employed in or desire to be employed in, as well as what other needs they have. From there designing centers could begin. I will work with Multnomah County's Department of County Human Services to perform these surveys and begin designing centers. I will create a City Bureau for Disabled Services as well.
Potential Land for Assisted Living Center
This land is located just off of 102nd and Halsey. This land could be ideal as it is in close proximity to Fred Meyer as well as the Gateway transit center.
